Research conducted at BEM reveals that approximately 3.3 million more Black Americans would be alive if life expectancy were equitable across all demographics. This disparity stems from various contributing factors.

The Muse Health partnership with our clients is designed to speak directly to the underrepresented Medicare Advantage population. From the conceptualization to the execution of our combined efforts, the patient/beneficiary will know that their experience is organically and authentically designed with their needs in mind. We are also uniquely positioned to demonstrate that the partnership between Muse Health and our clients will deliver lower costs and greater savings. Due in part to greater flexibility on cost and coverage policies, and required maximum out-of-pocket limits, Medicare Advantage has a 35% lower rate of cost burden as compared to traditional Medicare. Further, compared to their counterparts enrolled in traditional Medicare, Black Medicare Advantage beneficiaries report an average of $1,270 in cost savings.

Medicare beneficiaries have a significantly lower average household income, and are 2x as likely to report cost as a barrier to accessing healthcare.

The healthcare cost savings that Medicare Advantage plans can deliver beneficiaries are likely to be particularly meaningful to this population, and may factor into older Black adults’ decision to choose Medicare Advantage plans over traditional FFS Medicare.

Unlike traditional Medicare, nearly all Medicare Advantage plans (99 percent) offer coverage of supplemental benefits such as vision, dental, hearing, telehealth and/or wellness, and in recent years Medicare Advantage plans have expanded their supplemental benefit coverage to include programs designed to address social determinants of health. These elements of Medicare Advantage may be particularly supportive for underrepresented beneficiaries.

In addition to Special Needs Plans, Medicare Advantage offers services and programs to coordinate care which is an especially important benefit for underrepresented beneficiaries who often face disproportionate barriers to care and are more likely to be managing one or more chronic conditions. Medicare Advantage outperforms traditional Medicare across a range of health outcome categories and metrics.

FOR EXAMPLE Medicare Advantage was found to have a 43 percent lower rate of avoidable hospitalizations compared to traditional Medicare—among groups with complex chronic conditions, the gap is even greater, at 57 percent. As Medicare Advantage continues to be the preferred coverage choice for underrepresented beneficiaries, it’s critical that beneficiaries and decision makers alike have a comprehensive understanding of the role Medicare Advantage plans play in supporting these marginalized groups.
